Data accessible through FSRDCs
A variety of Federal statistical agencies make restricted-use data available to researchers through the FSRDC system. The Census Bureau maintains a list of partner and collaborating agencies and links to information about the data they make available.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) makes restricted-use Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data available through FSRDCs, including confidential data files and additional variables (fully-specified ICD codes, more detailed geographic variables, and more).

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) Restricted-Use File (RUF) contains more records than the public-use file, and additional variables including detailed geography, detailed race-ethnicity, detailed age, occupation and industry, and parent-child linkage.
Common Questions
Many of the datasets available through FSRDC have public-use versions. Restricted-use versions often include:
- Greater geographical detail (e.g. state, county, Census tract)
- More detailed demographic variables (e.g. detailed race-ethnicity or age variables without top coding)
- Additional variables (e.g. genetic information, more sensitive survey questions)
- Data linkages (e.g. crosswalks that enable linkages)
Exactly what is available, and what linkages are possible, depends on the dataset.
There are protocols for bringing outside data into your FSRDC project space. If you want to match a dataset at the person or business entity level, you may need to pay additional fees. You will also need signed agreements from the data owner(s). Read more about the process, fees, and requirements on the Census FSRDC website.
